The Holidays Around the World http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2017/12/the-holidays-around-the-world HAPPY HOLIDAYS! I am blessed to explore so many places and capture them in an image. In addition to the adventures, are the people I meet along the way. I’ve asked a few of my friends from around the world to share their favorite holiday memory and/or tradition which are paired with images from a few of these special places! My current exhibit is titled The Holidays Around the World featuring these images and stories.

Photography is my gift - I have received - it’s also my gift of what I have to share. I wish you a blessed holiday season full of love, peace and joy. I look forward to our paths crossing in the days ahead. Take care, Fatima

Mentoring Through Art http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2017/2/mentoring-through-art Fatima working with participants at the Ft. Bend County Juvenile Detention Center Break the chains - create

As artists, we have the gift to create - anything - anywhere - anytime.  No constraints hold us back, except ourselves.  I like to challenge myself not in what I can create in artwork, but in the community I live in.  I had the privilege of leading several workshops for ARTreach at the Fort Bend County Juvenile Detention Center with teenage boys and girls.

The video below is from one of these such workshops titled "Step Forward". This is the check list and the math of this particular session:

12 teenage boys

90 minutes

2 point and shoot cameras

2 volunteers

12x12" recreation room with limited supplies

The challenge I gave the participants was, "think what STEPS FORWARD will you take when you are released?"  They wrote their answers down and that became the shot list for each participant.  Working in teams where one is the photographer, one is the assistant and one is the model, they used only items available to them in the room as props for their photo shoot.

Step Forward program at Fort Bend Juvenile Detention Center - Texas The elements I taught about Photography work well in life as well.

- compose with purpose

- create a plan

- who will help you

- observe and make necessary adjustments

- change perspective trying it different ways

- if you don't like it, start with new plan

I collected their thoughts, notes and images and returned the following day with label print-outs of their images along with hardwood floor planks they could build and connect.  the slideshow depicts the foundation we were able to create in 90 minutes.  I love doing workshops with teens - they are incredible at using art to communicate.

If you're an artist, I challenge you to create - anything - anywhere - anytime.  In this scenario, it was creating possibilities - juvenile detention center - for 90 minutes.  I am very proud of this piece of art! And if you're not an artist, donate to a non-profit that helps deliver these types of programs in your community.

To find out more how you can provide such programs to underserved communities, visit ARTreach, a non-profit organization that uses the arts to change lives.

Reflection of Time http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2016/12/perspective
fallen. broken. dead.

During my visit to Yellowstone National Park, I watched many visitors walk past this tree. No longer standing to its great size, it cast a different image than what it provided for many decades if not centuries.

closer look.

What many viewed as a dead tree, I thought otherwise and decided to take a closer look.  Visible to all that would look beyond "the dead tree" was very intricate detail telling the history and life of this tree.

repurpose.

Like many things in life, it's about the perspective you use to view a situation or thing. Often times, when something is not doing what it has always done, it appears to be useless. I approach it a bit differently when I view it through my photographic eye and heart.

When I stumble upon such a sight, I see that the tree is showing me what it's really about.  That its beauty is not just in the towering image that has stood there for so many years, but also in the details and character that lies within, like all things -- at its roots.

When you can shift your perspective and see situations or things in new light, you're able to see a broader purpose.  For me, this tree continues to grow. Maybe not in the ground, but as my artistic inspiration and constant reminder that perspective is key, in all things related to my roots -

art & life.

same image. different perspective.

Collecting Good Souls http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2016/5/collecting-good-souls

As photographers, it's always about the image and this story is no different. The story began chasing the soldier in this image, Army Sgt. Angelo Klonis.  The image is titled "The Face" of WWII by legendary photojournalist W. Eugene Smith in 1944 that adorned the cover of LIFE book, World War II.  Years after the war, Klonis opened a bar in Santa Fe, NM named Evangelo's which is operated by the hero's son Nick Klonis today.

My partner on this project, Jonathan Irish and I visited the bar and had a conversation with Nick about the photo and his dad. We met one of the regular patrons, Richie Rich who shared his stories about Angelo and Nick.  And in all the stories we heard that evening at Evangelo's, we took Richie Rich's tribute to his family that served, and created the video above.

Okavango Delta UNESCO World Heritage Site http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2016/5/okavango-delta-unesco-world-heritage-site The geology of the area, a part of the African Rift Valley System, has resulted in the ‘capture’ of the Okavango River that has formed the Delta and its extensive waterways, swamps, flooded grasslands and floodplains. The Okavango River, at 1,500kms, is the third largest in southern Africa. The Delta’s dynamic geomorphological history has a major effect on the hydrology, determining water flow direction, inundation and dehydration of large areas within the Delta system. The site is an outstanding example of the interplay between climatic, geomorphological, hydrological, and biological processes that drive and shape the system and of the manner in which the Okavango Delta’s plants and animals have adapted their lifecycles to the annual cycle of rains and flooding. Subsurface precipitation of calcite and amorphous silica is an important process in creating islands and habitat gradients that support diverse terrestrial and aquatic biota within a wide range of ecological niches.

Permanent crystal clear waters and dissolved nutrients transform the otherwise dry Kalahari Desert habitat into a scenic landscape of exceptional and rare beauty, and sustain an ecosystem of remarkable habitat and species diversity, thereby maintaining its ecological resilience and amazing natural phenomena. The annual flood-tide, which pulses through the wetland system every year, revitalizes ecosystems and is a critical life-force during the peak of the Botswana’s dry season (June/July). The Okavango Delta World Heritage property displays an extraordinary juxtaposition of a vibrant wetland in an arid landscape and the miraculous transformation of huge sandy, dry and brown depressions by winter season floods triggers spectacular wildlife displays: large herds of African Elephant, Buffalo, Red Lechwe, Zebra and other large animals splashing, playing, and drinking the clear waters of the Okavango having survived the dry autumn season or their weeks’ long migration across the Kalahari Desert.

Rainy Days http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2016/3/rainy-days On a very rainy weekend in Texas (which are typically sunny), I am enjoying the memory of my trip to an iconic rainy location, London.  During my visit a few years ago, I was graced with four beautiful days of sunshine in a city often blanketed by clouds.  How different everything I saw must look on a cloudy day instead of a sunny day.  I took this great opportunity to jump on board one of the double deck tour buses to do the typical tourist trek.  If you're ever in London, definitely do this and sit on the upper deck.  The views are amazing and the city looks quite different from that vantage point.  One of my favorite moments during the ride was looking back at Westminster Abby as I crossed the Thames River.

Here is the capture.  Westminster Abby

Looking back at Big Ben and the Clock Tower of Parliment, you also think you're looking back in time.  Most people that view this print think it's from the 70s and times past.  The vintage Mercedes and traditional London cabs really help. However, the Mini Cooper provides the date stamp to know which decade.  It's at times like these that I'm grateful to what comes into the frame.  You can plan all you want and control as much as possible, but the images that are the strongest are those that just happen, as in life.

Here's a link to more images I captured during a moment in London.

Cheers!

National Bison Range http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2016/1/national-bison-range

From a population of 30 to 60 million animals roaming throughout North America, bison reached a low of 100 in the wild in the late 1800's.

Since 1908, the National Bison Range has played an important role in the successful recovery of these magnificent animals.

The fact that we can still see bison on the landscape is one of the finest accomplishments in the history of the National Wildlife Refuge System.

President Theodore Roosevelt established the National Bison Range on May 23, 1908 when he signed legislation authorizing funds to purchase suitable land for the conservation of bison. It was the first time that Congress appropriated tax dollars to buy land specifically to conserve wildlife. The overall mission of the National Bison Range is to maintain a representative herd of bison, under reasonably natural conditions, to ensure the preservation of the species for continued public enjoyment.

Growth http://www.fatimaphotography.com/blog/2014/8/growth I started working with JP Steel nine years ago.  The first effort was to design their company logo. Through the years, I've designed brochures, written copy for their website and helped with website efforts as well as periodic photo shoots.  Fast forward almost a decade and their growth is reflective in their facility, staff and client base.  It's exciting to see the growth, and as a photographer, it's an added bonus to be able to visually document it through the years.  They are featured in the August 2014 issue of Business In Focus Magazine and I'm humbled to have my captures of JP Steel's people, facility and efforts complimenting their story.
